July 16--Icefield Parkway
Lynn:
Some thoughts about camping the way we’re doing it. Reminds me of the game Concentration, where
you see something for just a second and then you have to remember where it is
later. When you have dozens of items
stored in plastic boxes, coolers, suitcases and bags, and you have all this
stowed here and there, it is quite the challenge to remember where it all
is.
I don’t know how many times we've
said the words, “I know I just saw it.
It has to be here.” Oh, by the
way, has anybody seen Randy’s tennis shoes?
Somehow they turned up missing three days ago. How does that happen? He thinks they’re in Montana.
Drove from Banff to almost Jasper. It took all day. Of course by the time we had breakfast in
the tent,
re-packed everything and left the
campgrounds, it was 11:30 a.m. People
were waiting in their cars in line to get our spot. The Icefield Parkway was everything it was
advertised to be and more. Stopped for
the night just short of Jasper at the Sunwapta Lodge. It’s obviously been around for a while but it
has a certain charm and is the only lodging for miles. It had a surprisingly good restaurant, where
we enjoyed what will probably be our last good meal for the next three
weeks. That meal consisted of Elk pot
pie and Buffalo spaghetti Bolognese.
